Insurance Options for Students
As a student at the University of Chicago, we recommend that you review and consider the following insurance options during your enrollment:
- Tuition
- Property/Renters
- Medical/Dental/Vision
We have found these types of expenses to be the most challenging for students as they pursue their degrees. Insurance is a budgeting and planning tool that assists in managing unexpected expenses during one's academic career.
Most insurance options are available annually and are open for enrollment at the start of the academic year in September. Some other insurance options have different open enrollment periods, so we encourage you to review them annually.
Tuition Insurance
Students may be unable to complete a quarter due to personal emergencies and need to engage in a late withdrawal. These students may seek out a full tuition refund. With GradGuard Tuition Insurance, they may be able to receive coverage for the tuition expenses that were lost.
GradGuard offers students a range of coverage options, and we recommend that you visit their website to learn more about the program. For a small fraction of your overall tuition costs, Tuition Insurance can protect up to 100% of your family's education investment should a student withdraw for a covered medical reason as advised by a licensed medical professional for the covered term. Tuition Insurance can cover you in cases of:
- Severe Injury
- Chronic Illness
- Mental Health Conditions
- Other Emergencies and Unexpected Issues

Property/Renters Insurance
Lost, stolen, or damaged items, including electronics such as laptops, computers, and smartphones, are students' most common unplanned out-of-pocket expenses.
Enrolling in Property/Renters' Insurance can provide peace of mind for a minimal investment. The University of Chicago recommends providers; however, families can work to include this on their own policies if they desire.
Student Property Insurance: Review coverage and deductible amounts that work for you. They provide coverage options as low as $132.00 for $5,000 with a $25 deductible.
GradGuard College Renters Insurance: Universities and off-campus property management companies do not replace stolen bicycles or backpacks, but GradGuard College Renters Insurance can. GradGuard coverage is designed for college life and contains exclusive features for students and families that you cannot access from other companies.
Medical/Dental/Vision Insurance and Plans
The University of Chicago requires all students to have medical insurance, or show proof of coverage while enrolled. Students must enroll in or waive the University Student Health Insurance Plan (U-SHIP) annually. For more information, visit www.wellness.uchicago and go to Student Insurance.
The University of Chicago also works to offer reasonable Dental and Vision plans to all students for purchase annually. We encourage you to review these plans, as these costs can be difficult to manage without coverage. These plans have flexible enrollment dates and enrollment periods. For more information, go to Student Insurance and click on Dental & Vision.
