Graduation Preparation Checklist

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation!

To help ensure a smooth transition after graduation, please review the checklist below:

Before Graduation

1. Diploma Ordering

  • Order your diploma through the Registrar's Office.
  • Update your address.

2. Avoid a Diploma Hold

  • Resolve your account 10 days before the end of the quarter to avoid a diploma hold. A diploma hold will remain until you resolve the balance.*

*You will still be able to walk at graduation regardless of your hold status. The University of Chicago offers various payment plans after you graduate.

3. Review Your Student Account

  • Log in to your student account and review any outstanding balances
  • Pay any past-due balance or make arrangements to resolve your account before graduation.
  • Outstanding balances may result in holds that can delay services, such as receiving your diploma.

4. Verify Your Contact Information

  • Update your personal email address, mailing address, and phone number in the student system.
  • This information is important for diploma delivery and future university communications, including your 1098-T.

After Graduation

1. Diploma Reception

The Registrar's Office awards degrees and issues diplomas. Be sure to:

  • Watch your university email for graduation and diploma updates.
  • Verify your mailing address if your diploma will be mailed.
  • Allow processing time after degrees are officially conferred before diplomas are issued.

2. Student Account

  • Continue monitoring your student account after graduation.
  • If a balance remains, make payment arrangements promptly to avoid collection activity or additional holds.

3. Repaying student loans

  • Review your loan servicer information.
  • Know when your grace period ends.
  • Explore repayment plans that fit your financial situation.
  • Keep your contact information current with your loan servicer.

4. Update Your Email Address

  • Update your contact information with employers, lenders, and other important organizations so you continue receiving critical communications.

Congratulations on your achievement! We wish you continued success in your next chapter.
